Guidelines for your body shape depending your calf size

Once you have identified your body shape, the size of your calf and the length of your leg line you must put all the relevant style information in context with each other. That means in order to achieve visual balance all the relevant aspects that determine your leg line must follow and conform to the general aim and rule of your body shape. This way you can identify what your personal style guide for your whole leg line is, and then you can dress and style it right.

As a result you will have an individual style guide for your whole leg line (including calf size) that is in tune with your body shape at the same time, giving you a visually balanced look overall. This will make it easier and faster to identify the right fashion trends and styles that will work for you.

In order to identify your own personal style guide, Joy of Clothes has created images not only of all the different individual body shapes, but also in connection with different leg lengths and calf sizes.

Here is an example of how to do it and how to use the images below:

  • Bodyshape Pear
  • Proportion: Longer body and shorter legs
  • Calf size: big calves
  • Bust size: small bust

Here is an example how your style guide changes when having a longer body, shorter legs and big calves.

  • Longer body, shorter legs, big calves, small bust (front)
  • Longer body, shorter legs, big calves, small bust (front)
  • Body shape: Pear

    • Aim: To enhance your upper body and balance with your lower half

  • Bust: Small

    • General: Need to add volume to create the illusion of a fuller bust

    • Specific: I not only need to layer and clutter in this area to add volume to my bust line, but also need to enhance my upper body in order to balance with my lower body so it is twice as important to create volume on my upper body.

  • Proportion: Long body, short legs

    • General: Need to elongate leg line and at the same time shorten upper body to create visual balance

    • Specific: I need to elongate my leg line so that my body looks proportional and the lower half of my body looks slimmer

  • Leg length: Short leg

    • General: Opting for clean and clutter free style lines will lengthen my leg line – I need to avoid clutter and busy style lines that will just add volume and bulk making me look even fuller and shorter visually.

    • Specific: It is absolutely crucial for me to avoid any features and style details that will create attention and add volume to my short legs, and because I have a longer body too, putting these two aspects together with the general aim for my body shape, it is three times as important to avoid any details on my lower half. This makes it even more important to opt for styles that lengthen my leg line, as well as making it look slimmer and in balance with my upper body so that I look proportional.

  • Calf size: Big

    • General: Lean and clean styles to slim calves down and avoid drawing attention to them.

    • Specific: Having bigger calves, on top of all the other limitations on my lower body restricts me to the most simple and most restricted style line to keep attention away from my lower body. That means I mustn’t opt for any hemlines that draws attention to my bigger calf, any figure hugging details that will show off my bigger calves (e.g. printed, patterned hosiery and trousers) or make use of boots and shoes that will just emphasise my fuller lower half, shorter legs and longer body with bigger calves, otherwise I will look very visually unbalanced. Putting this feature in context with the aim of my pear body shape I need to create a longer, leaner leg and draw attention away from a bigger lower body by creating volume on my upper body in order to create visual balance.

In short: Her lower half is has to stay simple and clutter-free, whilst my upper body is my playground to style, dress and have fun with fashion
