Women's maxi Dresses

The main characteristic of the maxi dress is the flowing skirt which is typically ankle or floor length in style. The design dates back to the 1960s when designer Oscar de la Renta created the first ever maxi dress and one of his designs went on to be featured in the New York Times in 1968, skyrocketing the trend for the dress style. During the 1970s, a number of international designers including Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent introduced maxi dresses to their collections combining boho charm with psychedelic colours, bright abstract designs and even a touch of paisley. At this time, this style of dress was made of synthetic man-made fibres. During the 1980s and 1990s, fashion didn’t have room for the maxi dress as power dressing and grunge took hold of the fashion world. However by 2005, the maxi dress had made a come back thanks to model Kate Moss wearing the style to a Charlotte Tilbury’s Ibiza wedding. By 2007, the maxi dress was not only seen on catwalks during the various fashion weeks but also in some high street stores and was now made from more natural fabrics, mainly cotton. Today the trend is as popular as ever for the warmer summer months. Celebrities who have been seen wearing the style include actress Halle Berry, Friend’s star Jennifer Aniston, fashionista Nicole Richie, Eva Longoria and Kim Kardashien to name just a few.
