Wedding Dress Bodice Glossary

Crumb catcher is an insert of fabric at the bust area that creates a double-layered style. It adds a decorative element to the bodice where one is closer to the body the other layers slightly over. This style has been in fashion with brides for hundred of years.

Boning is normally built into a bodice or corset for creating structure, shape and style by stiffening that part of the body.

Corset is considered shape wear and can be part of an undergarment or the bodice itself of a wedding dress. It can be either laced up in the front or back. It supports the bust and defines the waistline and creates figure-enhancing silhouette by reducing the waist and exaggerating the bust and the hips. The corset fashion has been attributed to Catherine de’ Medici who put a ban on thick waists at court attendance during the 1550s.

Keyhole bodice is a high cutout round neckline that can be placed in the front or back of a wedding dress.

Overlay is layered piece of fabric on top of the main fabric. Sheer is the most common overlay fabric for a wedding gown.

Ruching bodice is a gathered overlay where the fabric is gathered at opposite ends with concealed strings.

Insert is usually of a different design and fabric – almost of contrasting texture- placed between the parts of the main fabric of the bodice- mostly used for V- neckline style bodice.
