How to create visual balance between your height and calf size

Height is another crucial factor for dressing your calves, because it decides how good or how cluttered style details on your leg and ultimately on your calf will be. Whether you are tall or short makes a big difference when you have. small or big calves, because there is a difference in the size of gap between your knees and calves, and calves and ankles. It takes different kinds of dressing and style lines to address these with the goal of keeping a visual balance.

Examples how the style line can vary when having the same leg line but different calf size:

Your style guide is very simple and plain. Stick to clutter free lines:

  • Hoisery

only full tights, unless you are wearing socks and stockings under your trousers. Full tights need to be plain, dark colours and high in denier

  • Trousers

Full length only - never a narrowing leg (because this would be calf hugging). The minimum is a straight leg but don’t be tempted to go in the opposite direction - a wide leg will make you look even shorter

  • Hemline

Should never stop at your calf - best just below your knee or full length

  • Shoes and heels

Simple boots with no style details on the side such buckles or any bright colours. Choose those with an elastic side panel for a comfortable and perfect fit . Ankle boots should be worn only under your trousers, no ankle shoes. Wear medium or chunky heels only. You need height, so keep flat shoes for private use e.g. home, garden, beach, sport

Short legs and small calves

Your style guide is less is more. Choose style details on your lower half in a tone on tone look ie don't clash too much in colour or style.

  • Hoisery

Full tights or leggings are good. Medium to dark colours are best (a darker colour will visually lengthen your leg). Keep your patterns petite and avoid too much contrast on your leg line.

  • Trousers

Shorts, capri or turn ups on your calf are all good but avoid too much contrast in style or colour when combining with other clothes. Visually this will shorten your leg even more.

  • Hemline

    Above or mid-knee are best

  • Shoes and heels

No to chunky shoe styles. So, choose ankle strap or gladiator shoes with petite, delicate straps instead. Kitten or stiletto heels are good. Careful with wedges - they should have a slim shape back. Ballerinas and flat shoes are not bad, but a heel is better for your height.
