But this year will be different, because the key is to avoid making the mistakes that cause failure like setting the long term goal so far away that we will give up before reaching it. So, instead of making New Year’s resolutions or commandments let’s go with decisions in 2011. Decisions are final and is easier to act on what will help us to succeed.

Some women look always great no matter the size they are, they are ( almost always) happy, rarely get sick and are always fizzing with energy, they don’t gain weight or lose memory  .

So what’s their secret?

1. Like yourself: “The sooner you become your own best friend, the better live will be“- Diane von Fuerstenberg

There is no point of dwelling I wish I would be taller, younger etc and losing all the energy on the wrong factors. Accept who you are! If you don’t like your weight- this is in most cases- something you can change- then do ” walk the talk rather talk the walk”. Otherwise make the best out of your size since there are so many retailers out there who provide fashion options no matter what size you are.

2. Accept what you can’t change: “The key is being yourself. Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live”- Gianni Versace

Once you have accepted who are you will start to find things and features you love about yourself. You will start to dress for yourself, you will find your signature look and style personality- the result is that you will feel happy in yourself and with yourself- you will be true to yourself. All this will keep you motivated, positive – and fashion forward, because you know what works on you.

3. Be true too yourself: “‘How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone“- Coco Chanel.

Also, buy only clothes that fit you in the moment- never get trapped of buying clothes in a smaller size because you have plans to shed pounds or because you are dieting. That concept never works because firstly you tend too loose always weight in a different way and places, secondly  don’t reward yourself before you have achieved your end goal. The risk of slipping is too great and last not least once you bought the item in question most women lose their will power to lose the weight to fit into that dress. So, better reward yourself for small achievements and buy always  items that fits your current build, body shape and weight. Be someone rather trying to be someone you are not!!!

4. Stop to shop until you drop: “I am against fashion that doesn’t last. I cannot accept that you throw your clothes away just because it is spring”- Coco Chanel

Buy clothes that only work for you, your life style and budget. Meaning stop buying clothes you never wear because they are the wrong size, you don’t have an occasion for them to wear or because they are too expensive for the salary you make. Fashion is only fun when you start to build a workable wardrobe that consists of having clothes that work for your body shape, colouring, proportion, the life style you are leading and that you can afford! Make good investment buys rather than bad fashion buys.

5. Don’t get yourself in too much debt!:” Style is very different from fashion. Once you find something that works, keep it.”- Tom Ford

Fashion is just not worth it! They are just things, which are not as long lasting as it takes to pay back your credit card. We all know this feeling ” I am dying to have that dress”, ” I just needed to have this bag” or ” Every penny spent on those shoes are worth it”…unfortunately all not true. It is not that once you satisfied yourself with that purchase you stop shopping for more. No, there will be another item that you need because it will look great with what you bought before….and that is how it goes one. Break out of the devil circle by building a workable wardrobe where you only buy what you need to update or replace. You will see you have much more of your clothes because you start to work them by wearing them rather building up clutter of clothes that don’t work with each other or won’t work for most occasions.

6. Declutter your wardrobe! “When putting a wardrobe together, if your budget is limited, the most important thing is having the discipline to invest in one or two beautiful key pieces and mixing these with classic pieces. Plan your long-term wardrobe. Only buy pieces that you can’t live without; don’t be tempted by disposable”. Roland Mouret

Everyone is different in their needs, but keep in mind that changes in your lifestyle will affect your working wardrobe. So, before you start of thinking of planning your wardrobe, assess your lifestyle and what you need to wear. Start with a wardrobe audit and go through your clothes piece by piece, assessing whether they are the right colour and if they are right for your body shape, proportion and scale.Clothes that you don’t wear and which only have sentimental value should be put away out of your workable wardrobe. So, make room for clothes that complement you and the way you live. It is so therapeutic as well to get rid of “the old you” and make way for the ” new you”.

It is time to be fashion savvy, knowing a little bit more about the label you buy- making a difference to our lives and how we live. Say Hello to Ethical fashion that it ethically sourced.Ethical fashion and ethical products should promote the use of environmentally-friendly materials & production processes, as well as providing good working conditions and a fair wage. As well say NO to real fur and buy faux fur instead.  It is a big revival in fashion and it has never looked more chic or real than this time around by none other than Kate Moss. Other animal advocates are Stella McCartney and Bridget Bardot. It is without doubt the only way to go for fashion!D

8. Moderation is key for a balanced you! “Fashion is all about happiness. It’s fun. It’s important. But it’s not medicine.” Donatella Versace

Unfortunately most of us lead their lives in extremes at work or in our private lives or in the way we eat and drink. Either we work or party full on or we indulge ourselves without measures in food or/and drinks or we diet in excess. Therefore it shouldn’t come to us a surprise that such a life style doesn’t leave us damaged. Our body needs time to recover from work or play. So, build in some time to give your body and mind some time to recover and to re energise. You will feel better and look better rather worse to wear – no label in the world can and will change that.

9. Sleep, keep fit and eat well: “Mens sano in corpore sano”- (a healthy mind in a healthy body) is a famous Latin quotation, often translated as “A sound mind in a sound body.

Sleep will keep you balanced and calm, give you piece of mind, energise you and will help you to stay focus for the day. Plus it does wonder to your skin and digestion. Try to keep fit and to increase your activity by incorporating exercises into your daily routine e.g. using the stairs instead the lift, walking the kids to school, take the bicycle to work instead the car or get off 1 or 2 tube stop before your final destination. Why not keeping the same standard of high quality and labels in clothes as well in food? I never understood how some have high standards in clothes labels but none in food and opt for junk food or settle for bad quality in food. Eating bad food will show! There is no way of hiding no matter how much money you spend to try to hide it. So, do a U- turn and be good to your inner self by eating well, keeping fit and sleeping enough hours to feel energised, healthy and look your best.

Dressing in the right colours can improve your self-esteem and confidence. It’s an easy way to look good, feel good and co-ordinate your wardrobe. Not only that but wearing the right colours can help you achieve a younger, healthier and groomed look without having to resort to drastic measures. In business first impressions count and these are often based on your outward appearance.

Colour has a definite psychological and emotional impact on us. Being aware of the emotional impact that the colours you wear will have on others is an important consideration and can affect the people with whom you are meeting

We are all leading a busy life style, where it is difficult to carve out some time for yourself. But it is important to find time to yourself and for yourself! Get some “me time”, which means to every woman something different. It will make you feel calmer, balanced and happier when interacting with family, friends and the outside world.

The “little black dress” is essential to a complete any woman’s wardrobe. As a “rule of fashion” every woman should own a simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Because it is meant to be a staple of the wardrobe for a number of years, the style of the little black dress ideally should be as simple as possible: a short black dress that is too clearly part of a trend would not qualify because it would soon appear dated.

The rise of Dior’s “New Look” in the post-war era and the sexual conservatism of the 1950s returned the little black dress to its roots as a uniform and a symbol of the dangerous woman. Hollywood femmes fatales were portrayed often in little black dresses in contrast to the more conservative dresses of housewives.

The generation gap of the 1960s preferred in general a miniskirt on their versions of the dress and designers catering to the youth culture continued to push the envelope – shortening the skirt even more, creating cut outs or slits in the skirt or bodice of the dress. Many other women in the 1960s aspired to simple black sheath dresses similar to that designed by Hubert de Givenchy and worn by actress Audrey Hepburn in the the film Breakfast at Tiffany.

The 1970s did see a few little black dresses. The popularity of business wear during the 1980s brought the little black dress back into vogue. Coupled with the fitness craze, the new designs incorporated details already popular at the time such as broad shoulders or peplums: later in the decade and into the 1990s, simpler designs in a variety of lengths and fullness were popular. The LBD remained itself simple in cut and fabric in the grunge culture of the 1990s.  Starting in the late 2000s the fashion trends of the 1980s returned to favour. That meant the return of body conscious clothing and the re-emergence of black. All these things have brought the LBD back, and as now it is popular as ever.

You know when you got the right LBD, because the Little Black Dress is right, there is nothing else to wear in its place.

Sunday was as well not a great fashion outing for her when she stepped out in a gold, short asymmetrical Bodyamr dress. The metallic look in her dress and shoes was perfect. It is great for her colouring. Also, her hair do was super. But the style of the dress was completely wrong for her body shape. She needs to keep the drama and attention to the lower half of her body and not visa versa otherwise her shoulders are simply looking broader. Plus wearing these “look at me” earrings are not helping her shape.   But the worst fashion offence was wearing these earrings in the first place! Why would you add any attention seeing earrings to a dress that has a turtle neckline?  Anyone knows you never layer sparkle on sparkle! It really ruined her look and made it look tacky again.

Glittter Pumps:

Dannii Minogue didn’t get it all right as well on Saturday. The colour of her Philip Armstrong dress was spot on fashion dress but the attached oversized bow was killing it. It is the perfect example why a full hourglass can’t wear a high neckline as well can’t cope any fuzz and details on the bust. It makes her top heavy. Plus the oversized bow shows as well that this detail is overpowering her short height. Details need to stay in tune and proportion with her height in order to create the illusion to make her look taller. Having said her hairstyle was again so spot on.  Its playfulness played down the dressiness of her dress.

Sunday night Dannii came back fighting and totally rocked in her black black three-quarter-length corseted Dolce & Gabbana dress. It is absolutely perfect for a full hourglass body shape, because it is simply following her curves. Combined with her relaxed hairstyle she played down the “sexiness” of the dress and made it look classy and fabulous! When looking at Dannie Minogue past fashion style it embodies what Coco Chanel meant when she said:

“Look for the woman in the dress. If there is no woman, there is no dress.“

I am not sure as well what the X-factor stylist were thinking when styling the contestants.

Rebecca Ferguson blew us away again with her singing and make up, but the choice of dress was a crime for her pear body shape. A total misfit that accentuates her lower half and keeps no attention to her top. It should be completely the other way around.

Katie Waissel outfit and look flattered her shape and colouring on Saturday. The thing that didn’t look right was her wig. Not only was she seen in it the week before but the wig looked as well too obvious. Also her dress on Sunday looked good on her. It was just again the wig that made it look all messy and dated.

Treyc Cohen outfit never matches her shape, fashion and occasion. First of all white clothes and “snow white” looks are reserved in the UK only for summer and Christmas. Plus two nights in a row wearing the same colour? Not to mention it really doesn’t work at all for her colouring at all. She looks better in deeper and darker colours rather in lighter colours that are close to her face. It is washing her out. Her Saturday night gown worked for her petite height and short neck. The solid colour  made a her look longer and her strapless dress that kept the attention away from her short neck. They shouldn’t have skipped as well the necklace for the same reasons. Unfortunately the style was completely wrong for her body shape. They should have chosen an Empire line dress that would have been more flattering for her thighs rather than going for a waist dress with its panels going out on her fullest part of her body and adding negative attention on it. As well her Sunday outfit was a total misfit for her body shape. Firstly it had far too much clutter for her short height with the result it made her look fuller, because it overpowered her but as well it was not complementing her thighs.

Cher Lloyed looks on Saturday night were a mixture of the old Cher and what she is turning into : A copy of Cheryl.  Her make up and her hairstyle is complete copy of Cheryl. I liked the idea of leather trousers but not in white for the reasons above. I loved the pink leather jacket and her ovesized blue necklace but her trainers are really not working with the theme and colour palette. I get the part of opposite attracts but that is simply a style clash! Her Sunday look was so much better, because it was more of a credible choice for her age and style personality. Plus the colour choices and style fell into place for her. The only thing which didn’t work for me was her hair- too grown up – too much Cheryl- and not enough Cher!

On a personal I was very disappointed about the whole conduct on Sunday by most of the judges. Simon Cowell always said in the past that the X-factor was a singing competition but last Sunday he said word for word on Sunday night, that Treyc Cohen was the better singer and Katie Waissel the better performer. Staying in tune with his previous comments he should have stayed by his guns and voted Katie off. Though I understand Cheryl’s motive not to vote, but rules are rules and can’t be bent to ones favour otherwise we got the situation one rule for one and one rule for others- how can be that fair and just?

Jeans might be great multitaskers, but even they aren’t miracle workers. Don’t expect to buy one pair that will cover every occasion, from glitzy dinner to lazy Sunday morning. Work out which wardrobe job you want your jeans to do and buy accordingly – no single pair will do it all!

Firstly, keep your jeans current and sharp looking! They might have been in fashion for decades, but that doesn’t mean you can buy one pair and wear them for ever and ever. Jeans (like most clothes) do have a sell by date! Nothing will date your look faster than an outmoded style of jeans.

When buying jeans, you are not only selecting a specific cut with which you feel comfortable, you are choosing a “style” with which you should identify.

Make this decision with knowledge of the styling options and an understanding of the best fit for your body type.

In addition to this you need to think of the right colour.

The darker the colour, the more slimming the jeans are. Go for greys, blacks and dark blue (indigo) if you want to create the illusion of thin legs and hips.

The major choices available at any one time will vary with the current fashion trends and the market a particular manufacturer caters to (teens, juniors, active, urban, etc…). Jeans come in a variety of different:

• Fits

  This refers to how tight, how close to the skin the pants should be worn.

• Cuts

  This refers to the actual shape of the pants (leg, waist and pocket types).

• Washes and finishes

  Usually with the purpose of achieving a soft, worn in look.

• Fabric options

Women  will spend more than £1billion in the sales – on clothes they will never wear, research reveals.

In total, Britons spend some £4.1billion in sales on goods that are never used, at an average cost of £85.60 a person.

Women are the worst offenders, with 10 per cent of their average wardrobe consisting of clothes and accessories bought in sales but never worn – and more than half of the items still have the price tag on.

Some love sales – others hate it – some are impulse buyers – some spend more than they can afford.

No matter which group of shoppers you fall into – if you are somewhere in between – maybe it is time to have a more systematic approach or just keeping the following things in mind when you  go shopping the next time.

Budget: How much can you spend per month?

It is not worth going overboard and being always in debt with your credit card. So, if you are an impulse buyer or someone who plans their shopping trip- know always how much you can spend when hitting the shops.

Investment buys- Classic clothing

Investment pieces or classic clothing will vary according to your life style and personality, but they are classic or investments buys because they can be worn most of the year – independent of which season- or which trend is dominating that year or season. They can be worn for years without looking dated! Important here is to keep focus on the quality and buy the highest you can afford. So, make the math here – how many times will you wear this item in that season – year – or years? The cost per wear is much lower – the more you wear something, the less expensive it becomes!

Shop only when you feel good about yourself
Hitting the shops when feeling low about yourself in order to do some shopping rehab ends up most of the times in a bad experience. You will be ending up buying just for the thrill but with any thought about it, so they joy will last only for a moment and the end will be even more depressing because you spend money on something you don’t want and will end up returning it in the end. Or you will end up even more depressed because you can ‘t find anything you like or you don’t like anything on you when you look at your image in the mirror. You are much better off buying yourself some nice chocolate to make you feel good.

Dress comfortably
Don’t bother with a full make up or great hair do- it will just get in the way while trying on clothes – look nice and at ease with yourself. Also wear clothes that are easy to get in and out of otherwise you will start to loose interest of trying something on, because it takes too long or it is just to difficult to get out of your clothes. Don’t forget to wear as well comfortable shoes when going shopping – and take the shoes with you that you will be wearing with the garment your buying

Shop when the stores are least crowded
Some people can’t avoid to hit the shops when everyone goes because of work, kids or other commitments. But if you can try to go when less people are in the shops, so you don’t have to queue at the changing rooms, can move around the shops easily and see the garments in full display.

Know the store’s return policy
Each store or department store has different return policy- some return your money and in others you just can exchange it for another garment. The normal return policy is two weeks, but can go up as well up to 30days. Be careful when shopping in sale, because most often they cannot be returned at all!

Shop only for things which work for you!
Know your colour palette, your body shape, scale and proportion, so that you know what fabrics, patterns and styles will look great on you. That doesn’t mean you should not experiment, but also you should be honest what works for your figure and colouring. Be true to yourself and shop for the body you have got and not the one you want! It is all about feeling good now in the clothes you buy and not when you will loose some weight then and there! It just will end up in tears because this garment will come with a “but” and will put pressure on you and so the beloved item will turn into a be hated one instead. Last but not least the clothes you buy need to be for real life- don’t try to buy items you might wear but don’t know yet or because they look so pretty but you won’t wear them so much because they might be not comfortable. Keep remember looking good is all about feeling good that means when you are in pain e.g. because trousers are too tight or heels are too thin then you don’t feel like yourself and therefore you don’t look yourself- it’s going always to show how comfortable you are in your clothes!

Wearing a bright colour in your dress will enable you to wear it for daytime occasions, but also for evening engagements- you just have to combine the right accessories. Wearing your favourite colour and wearing the right colour for your colouring and body shape might not always be the same thing. Keep also in mind that little changes in your hair such as highlights or lowlights in your hair will affect your dominant colour. This means a colour that may have looked great in the past, now doesn’t work so well because your hair colour has changed or skin matured. So, don’t try to force it and try something new instead – embrace change rather than seeing it negatively. If there are colours that look great on you, but for one reason or another you don’t like the colour on you or at all, then just don’t wear it. As important as it is to wear the right colours, it’s also important to feel comfortable with the colour choice you are wearing.

Black/Navy/Grey. Navy and black are true “power” colours. Black is the colour of sophistication and power. However, whereas women can wear all black during the day, on a man, all black is best reserved for a black-tie affair unless it is broken up with a white or coloured shirt and tie. Dark colours tend to make a person appear thinner and taller. Wearing a dark skirt with matching trousers and shoes will make a short woman appear taller.

Grey is the colour of teamwork, agreement, and passivity. In a darker charcoal shade, grey is a true power colour. In a lighter shade, it becomes more relaxed. Grey is a good choice for people in sales, banking, or finance and it is ideal in combination with other colours to personalise according to colouring, scale and proportion. However, grey is not a colour to be worn on its own – it will make you look “robot like” ie lacking any own personality…

Red is the most active and energetic colour and a powerful accent colour for men. It is the colour of the initiator; no wonder red foulard ties are considered “power” ties. For women, red is an excellent choice for jackets, blouses, and dresses but it is usually too strong in a suit. Red is the colour of power, sexiness and energy.
