Minis-A Short Story!

The sky is blue and the sun is shining and everything feels and looks better and prettier. Well, most of the time. It is also  the time when everyone starts to expose their flesh and legs even though they would look better wrapped up or hidden away- which brings me to a subject close to my heart: ” Minis”! They come in all sorts of shapes like shorts, skirts, dresses, tunics and kaftans. If you find an object to your liking and you find it as well in your size, please do not assume it automatically looks good on you. The right size doesn’t give you a guarantee on fit, look and visual balance.

To make it clear:

  • Legs

Women who don’t have set of beautifully shaped legs- short or long should never wear minis! Opt either for calf size length to cover up bigger thighs, or knees and in the event of bigger calves wrap them in solid coloured tights.  Women with bigger calves, thighs or knees or not ideal legs are really better off treating hemlines like minis, above the knee, at knee, below the knee and calf length like if they don’t exist at all. Stick to Maxi Dresses and and trousers. There is no point of forcing something on your body if you don’t meet the necessary requirements for that outfit. Believe me I know what I am talking about! There are enough other clothes options to choose from that will look great on you!

  • Age

Many women over 35 have still legs to die for. I am not saying there shouldn’t be showing their assets. But the age thing becomes  a bit of an issue and needs consideration. Wearing a mini with no tights in the city or in town when when you are in your 40is a bit …hm…inappropriate. You’ve got still the killer legs but maybe not the face to match it. The whole look doesn’t go and it is all rather an aging affair. It is a different story if you wear a mini version in the garden, on holidays on the beach- nobody will flinch even if your are in your 70 and plus. Simply because it goes with ” the theme”! So, I say drop the hemline for ” above the knee” or “at knee”- you will see you will gain more in your look & feel, because it will look more together and appropriate! Plus you have still got enough leg line to show off.

  • Occasion

As mentioned before the time needs to be right for a mini and even more when they are coming “alone” meaning with no tights in sight. I must admit I am a big Italian fan and how Italian women are dressing. An Italian woman would never been seen in town, at work or in meetings in bare legs- even in the hottest weather. They have figured out long time ago, that tights, stockings are a classier, sexier and more feminine way of wearing dresses, skirts and minis.  A classic dress or skirt outfit can be immediately transformed by wearing different types of tights or stockings. If the weather is too warm or hot choose stockings with a fine and low denier. It looks simply naff seeing women in dress or skirt suits- wrapped up on top because being afraid of exposing to much chest but “completely” under dressed on their legs. This dress style just doesn’t work. A mini hemline with naked skin needs an airy feel all overall. Minis are the symbol of warm weather, sun and summer. So, don’t try to wear two seasons in one outfit- winter top and summer on the bottom. Keep it to one season. If you are covered up on top,  wear leggings, jeggins or tights. Also, make sure you are dressed for the occasion.  A mini is not an ideal choice for work and formal events e.g. weddings, church, Christmas .

Also, a thought when choosing a mini outfit: if you need to sit a lot a mini can prove very tricky! Firstly because when crossing your legs you run the risk of exposing more than you like and secondly it can be come a quite an itchy affair.

So, stay on target! Dress to your strengths, body shape, age, occasion.

My hot heels!

The new collections by Irregular Choice  and Iron Fist are  set to be the trend setter for this coming season.

They are quirky, sweet, individual and will give you for sure a one of a kind look in your outfit. The shorter you are the leaner and cleaner you should keep your wardrobe outfit. The taller you are the more focus points you can integrate in dressing your body shape. But you don’t have to complicate it- just let the shoes do the talking by keeping your outfit neutral or natural.

But before choosing your favourite design or shoe keep in mind that a visually balanced body, regardless of weight or height, always looks most flattering.Calves come in different sizes and shapes and each variation requires a different styling and dressing guide.Dressing your calves requires a strategy, because you need to have an understanding of your build, you need to put the size of your calves in context with your bust, body shape, height and proportion. By modifying the lines of your clothing you can create visual balance whether you have small or large calves.

Party Feet!

You have the dress, the bag and your cover up- but which shoes will you wear with it? Are you going for a matchy match,  rock chick ,glamorous or edgy look? Stand out of the crowd for the right reasons by choosing your perfect heel according to your proportion, calf size and body shape.

Some know how:

  • Big calves

Don’t be tempted by choosing a high stiletto heel shoe, because it looks great and fits your shoe size when not having the right calf size. The thinner the heel the smaller the calf must be. Heels should be seen like an extension of your calf size!  That means stiletto heels are mostly for women with a small calf.  Also, avoid any delicate pattern or ankle straps or details or bright colours around your calf. Keep simple and clean without any embellishments or drama. This is not the part that should be highlighted but instead played down.

  • Short in height

Being short in height you should be opting for shoes that are lengthening your leg line and not visually shortening it. So, stay away from ankle boots, calf boots, that cover up the front face of your foot . The more details a shoe has the more space it needs to “shine” and “breath”. If you can you should wear always wear a bit of a heel not matter what the occasion – with exceptions e.g. sport etc. Ballerinas are not your best footwear.

  • Proportion

You need to choose wisely when you are not in proportion meaning having either a longer body and shorter legs or shorter body and longer legs. In general if you have longer legs and a shorter body it is best to avoid heels in your shoes because it will make youeven more unproportional. Similarly if you have a longer body and shorter legs flat shoes should be only worn where it can’t be avoided and then it is best to keep them simple and clean. Keep in mind that coloured heels and design heels can shorten your leg line, so make sure you wear them with dark long trousers. Calf boots, ankle boots, ankle straps are only for women who have the legs and can afford to shorten visually their leg line. In this case it is only an option for women with a shorter body and longer legs.

The big comeback for Suspenders, Garters and Holds up

“I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little – if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny. And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny”

Coco Chanel

Not only the “40ies” but as well suspender, hold ups and stockings  are back in fashion. The interesting twist is how to wear them- is not just by night- but also by day. Some brave ones and who have the legs to show are making a fashion statement with it. London retailers such as Figleaves and Agent Provocateur say they experiencing currently a boom, because women are experimenting with lingerie and hosiery. Apparently it is a Dita von Teese effect. “Women want to improve their mood in a recession”.

Wearing nice lingerie and hosiery can give women a fantastic boost in self confidence and as long as you don’t wear them for everyone to see you just have to focus on the right fit and size of the garment in question. As soon as it becomes part of an outfit, watch out that you choose them carefully. They need to suit your body shape, your leg line and the size of the calves. It is not about showing of the garment but instead showing how the garment is underlining the shape of your body, leg line and calf size.
