Meet Sarah Curran, Founder and CEO of My Wardrobe!

Having been a fan of My Wardrobe for a few years I am absolutely thrilled to have had the chance to interview Sarah Curran, the founder and CEO of MY Wardrobe.

It is a success story that started in 2006 and since then they never looked back. They doubled sales and site visitors in 2009 and have now developed a strong international following.   They also won the ” Best Customer Experience at the Drapers 2010 E-Tail Awards”, which I must say from my own experience of their customer service is not surprising.

  • Here is a little background to the company:

They launched 2006 and offer carefully edited ready to wear, shoes and accessories collections from some of the world’s leading and hard to find brands such as Mulberry, By Malene Birger, See by Chloe and Anya Hindmarch. New designers for Spring Summer 10 included Jasmine di Milo, Elizabeth & James, Maje and Designers Remix and the autumn season is ready to go live soon – so stay tuned!

The 27th January also saw the launch of the debut menswear site offering men the latest ready to wear, shoes and accessories from leading mid-range designer brands such as Paul Smith, McQ, Nudie, Acne and Lyle and Scott.

They also provide shoppers with an opportunity to see selected pieces from the collections shown on my-tv – a weekly style advice video with guest presenters from the fashion industry and leading brands.

Here are  Sarah’s answers to my questions:
1. If My wardrobe would be your girl friend- how would you describe her and your relationship?

My-wardrobe.com is a 24/7 relationship, but is incredibly exciting and rewarding.

2. What is the first you do when starting work and what is the last thing you do when finishing your day?

I always check my emails, catching up on correspondence and checking the morning sales.    Then I meet with my PA to go through the day’s meetings and messages.   The day is usually spent in meetings with the team, press or brands, so I will usually finish the day the way I start it by responding to emails and going through the sales.

3. Where do you take you ideas and inspiration from what my wardobe should or shouldn’t be doing or should become or shouldn’t become? How do you keep up to stay in touch and in tune what is going on in the fashion world and also staying ahead competitors?Which magazines, newspapers, blogs do you follow closely?

I have always believed in what the my-wardrobe.com brand is and where it is positioned in the market.  It’s extremely important to understand your brand and your customer to ensure that every thing that you do meets your customers’ needs.    my-wardrobe.com is all about ‘accessible fashion’, bringing carefully-selected pieces from  the latest collection from the accessible luxury fashion designers, so every thing that we do always has an ‘inclusive’ tone, making fashion attainable, as well as aspirational.   Every thing from the high street, to blogs, to magazines, art galleries, to brands,  and new technology inspires me.   Every one is pushing the boundaries, especially with technology and it makes working in the online space incredibly inspiring and exciting.

I read all the weekend newspapers and supplements, glossy and weekly magazines.   I also subscribe to many of the online publications and fashion industry blogs, which means that I can access all of the latest news from my Blackberry.

4. My wardrobe has grown so fast in terms of sales and staff. How do you manage that growth without losing control and the ‘founders’ flair . Which responsibilities do you feel you can’t delegate and have to handle personally?

It’s been a phenomenal four years for my-wardrobe.com.  We have now seen a move from original base in Nottingham to a new premises with a much bigger warehouse and we are just about to move to a new London HQ.  The team has grown from the original two, Andrew and I to 77 across the two offices.   We are extremely lucky to have a strong executive management team who manage the departments.    I’m very passionate about all areas of the business and I work closely with all of the teams to work on direction of the buying, PR and marketing activity, design, styling and my-tv – our weekly style videos.

5. You have achieved an incredible company culture. Speaking of my own experience as retail partner and customer- your staff are always efficient, helpful, professional but above all just friendly and nice. So, what is your secret when hiring staff? What are you looking at when hiring?  What is the deciding factor to offer someone a job at my wardobe?

We are incredibly lucky to have such a strong, passionate team.   Culture has always been very important to me and ensuring that every new candidate fits that culture is key.   Obviously, experience is a given, but having the personality, drive and passion for the particular role is something that we look for.

6. What are you doing to keep the company culture going? How do you motivate your staff to ensure a happy work environment?

We have tried to create a dynamic and exciting working environment across both of our London and Nottingham offices.    With competitive salaries, a good benefit scheme and regular appraisal programme, we ensure that every employee feels that they can build their career at my-wardrobe.com.

7. What do you love to do when not working ” on my wardrobe empire”? What is your hobby?

All of my spare time is spent with my son Jake.   He is becoming a bit of a tech enthusiast and loves nothing more than playing with my iPod and iPad.  We have just moved house, so I’m really enjoying working on the decoration of the house.   Jake already has a good eye, so is helping me to choose paints and lamps.

8. Tell me something what not a lot people know about you?

I love to run.    I try to run around five miles per day – it’s a great relaxant after a day in the office.

9. What is happening next for my wardrobe- next 3 months, next 6 months, next 12 months?

We have a very exciting future ahead for the business.   We are focused on growing our womenswear and menswear business, with the introduction of new, sought-after brands and building the depth and range of our buy.   Being an online retailer, innovation is key to improving the customer experience and making every visit to the website more than just a one off visit, it has to offer something that makes you want to come back time and time again.   The launch of our my-tv was an important mile stone for e-tail as we were the first online retailer to launch click-to-buy TV and we are always looking at new ways to innovate.

10. What are your favourite pieces of your current collection? And which items are most popular with your customers?

My must-have pieces from the pre-Autumn Winter 10 collections would have to be the black Mulberry Alexa, the Current Elliot Captain cargo, a D&G black blazer and a Sportmax chunky necklace.    The Mulberry Alexa was an instant sell-out success and we now have huge waiting lists for the new collection.  We also saw an unprecedented demand for the J Brand Houlihan cargo trouser, which sold out within an hour and prompted a significant re-order.

These are my favourite pieces from my wardrobe:

I am in love with Alice by Temperley

I am absolutely taken by Alice, the new line created by the designer Alice Temperley. It is simply a beautiful collection and full of investment pieces for the summer. Plus the price is right! So who is Alice?

ALICE by Temperley, the sister line to Temperley London, launched for Spring Summer 2010. With three collections a year, the affordable and easy to wear line offers strong separates, casual dresses, knitwear, statement jackets and accessories.

The ALICE girl is fun, inspiring and knows what she likes. She mixes feminine with a touch of rock-and-roll for an eclectic look. The ALICE by Temperley fanbase already includes a range of London girls such as Daisy Lowe, Amber Le Bon, Tali Lennox and Leah Weller.

And this is what Alice says about her new fashion line:

Temperley London - Presentation - Fall 2010 MBFW

Why did you create the ALICE by Temperley collection?
I love the idea of opening the brand up to a younger demographic and making it available to a wider audience. It’s been in the works for a while and based on all the feedback we have received now seemed like the perfect time to launch a line that is slightly younger and more accessible, but still fashion forward with fantastic prices and quality.

2. What were your inspirations for the ALICE by Temperley collection?
The collection is inspired by the London girl, British spirit in general and an independent sense of fashion.

3. Who were your muses in designing this collection?
London girls of the moment like Amber Le Bon, Alexa Chung, Alice Dellal and Georgia Jagger. I also used my girlfriends as muses. I asked ten of my girlfriends to show me their favourite summer and holiday pieces. I based parts of the collection on their requests as I got quite a clear picture of what wardrobe staples we were all after.

4. Who is the ALICE by Temperley girl?
The ALICE girl isn’t afraid to mix things up. She’s got a bit of rock-and-roll in her by nature and has fun with her look. She’s the one who always surprises you with her unique, effortless and ultimately covetable style.

5. What ALICE by Temperley pieces are your personal favourites?
I love the Animal Shirt Dress; animal prints are always a personal favourite of mine. The Eagle Leather Jacket, a quilted biker jacket in soft grey leather, is perfect to throw on over a feminine dress. The Mini Mimi Stripe dress is a really wearable, everyday/everywhere dress great for the beach, city or countryside.

In the Navy!

Every year in spring we see the return of the Navy Trend, which goes as well by the names of the Marine or Riviera look or/and trend! This trend is so popular, because firstly it feels like a fresh brise after a long winter, secondly it reflects sun, summer and holidays and last but not least this trend is wearable by anyone no matter what the dominant colour, body shape or body size- or age!  Obviously everyone has to pick the right colour combination for their dominant colour, the right style for their body shape and the correct proportions for their body size.

White Things!

White is always a spring/ summer trend. It never goes out of fashion. What changes is how you wear it, what you wear it with and which of the latest items you accessorise it with.

The Brit Awards - Show

As secure and safe it might sound to buy white there are a lot of mine fields to step into. Many of us are so concerned with the latest fashion trends and items that a lot of us forget that a fashion trend doesn’t only have to suit your body shape, size and colouring but also the occasion, weather and season. You just can’t wear all the fun and colour of spring and summer when it is cold and raining outside. It makes you look sad and desperate and turns someone who is a fashion savvy into a fashion victim, because they can’t adopt to the weather condition. Fashion is only fashion when it not only looks right on you but also when you look comfortable and at ease.  Something  you never feel when trembling of being cold, getting wet and soaked because not dressed for it, getting all the dirt on your white outfit that comes with bad weather. White is a colour that requires sunshine to come out to its full potential- in cold or warm weather. Also, white only looks good when it looks white and clean otherwise you look very quickly shabby in your outfit.

A solid white outfit is not always a winner for everyone’s colouring;

Dominant Colour Light:

A fantastic choice. You can wear white from top to to if you like and if it is appropriate.

Dominant Colour Deep:

Not best to wear it as solid colour near your face, because it is too light for you and it will wash you out. Unless you wear your e.g. white top or shirt with a jacket or coat in a deeper colour. The deeper colour has always be stronger or in majority versa the white colour. Or to be sure keep keep the white to your lower half.

Dominant Colour Warm:

It is a bit of tricky one. If you got porcelain skin and red hair the pure white will provide a good contrast to your hair. But if you don’t have that type of skin it will easily clash with that and your hair together. Therefore you need to “warm” the white with yellow driven colours such as brown, green, orange, yellow, coral, tomato red etc- meaning you need to combine it with any of these type of colours when wearing white.

Dominant Colour Cool:

One of the best colour and absolutely must for this group. It will balance your white hair and make any outfit sharper- especially when wearing some nude/neutral colours with it.

Dominant Colour Clear:

As well one of the must colours for this group. It will almost always guarantee a contrast effect with any other combined colour.

Dominant Colour Soft:

White is an essential accent colour for this category to ensure that the overall look doesn’t look to muted.

Some adivce when buying your white item in question:

  • The white shirt: Always a winner no matter what age or season. It should be part of every woman’s wardrobe. A white shirt makes muddy/ nude colours look sharper and by wearing a cardigan, jacket etc on top of it you always can tune and soften the pure white to suit your colouring.
  • White top/ T- shirt are a must as the white shirt in a woman’s wardrobe.  It is a great neutral weapon to dress up or down an outfit and will give any outfit always a lift. A classic that shouldn’t  be missed in anyone’s wardrobe.
  • White Dress: Is a beautiful choice for a summer outfit. But be careful the more formal, elegant and in a maxi version the more festive it will look. Many times it looks like women are taking a wedding dress out for a stroll. Try to choose your white dress right for the occasion, in a style that can’t be mistaken for a wedding dress and/ or choose it with colour and a pattern combination or mix it up with accessorising it with an contrasting theme or style. Avoid to dress in white from head to toe unless the occasion requires it. Also, the older we get the less forgiving a pure white dress will look on us. I guess it goes with the territory ” not that innocent anymore…”.
  • White Jacket: As well a must for any woman’s wardrobe, but should be worn only in sunshine or in a warm climate.  Not only one looks being on the wrong side of the planet but also the whole look can you turn look naff.
  • White Coat: Always a favourite for the summer! But proves in the UK not always a great investment buy since the sunny and warm days are here numbered. So, the more time you spend in a warm climate the better your money is spent on a white coat.
  • White trousers: Injects instantly elegance and chique to your outfit. It can be a one of your wardrobe heroes that you can’t live without it, but be careful since white trousers are not very forgiving when not having an easy  body shape to dress. It brings always attention and adds additional “visual volume” to that part of the body. So, make sure you can take it. Also, ensure you wear the right underwear with it, because many times the colour, style and make of your underwear can be seen by anyone but you. Not a good look at all!
  • White shorts: It always brings a smile to our faces since it is always the synonym for  sunshine, warm weather, fun, good time simply ” me time “. Watch out you got the right hemline for your thighs, calves and age. The thumb rule is the bigger and older they are the longer the hemline.
  • White skirts: Almost nothing makes an outfit as instantly girlie or feminine  chique as a skirt- depending on its style.  Most of the times they are not best to wear with tights, therefore they should be only worn with warm temperature, a hemline that suits the leg and occasion and in a style that works your age.
  • White shoes: Not always a hit. White pumps are best left for special occasions and white sandals and trainers are dirt sensitive.  It is better to buy cheaper white footwear but two instead, so you have more and longer wearing the look before they look shabby. It is simply impossible to keep them out of any dirt, foot marks or scratches.
  • White swimwear: Looks great on young, toned or both body.  Wearing a white swim wear gets you very quickly into dangerous waters with your skin, body and size and age. If in doubt just pass on this one!
  • White bags: As nice as they are in form of a clutch or shoulder or handbag or shopping bag they quickly pass their sell by date. They only wear with the right outfit, occasion, weather and also only when they are still completely untouched by any scratches and marks.
