Jeans style guide for every body shape!

Jeans might be great multi taskers, but even they aren’t miracle workers. Don’t expect to buy one pair that will cover every occasion, from glitzy dinner to lazy Sunday morning. Work out which wardrobe job you want your jeans to do and buy accordingly – no single pair will do it all!

Firstly, keep your jeans current and sharp looking! They might have been in fashion for decades, but that doesn’t mean you can buy one pair and wear them for ever and ever. Jeans (like most clothes) do have a sell by date! Nothing will date your look faster than an outmoded style of jeans.

When buying jeans, you are not only selecting a specific cut with which you feel comfortable, you are choosing a “style” with which you should identify.

Make this decision with knowledge of the styling options and an understanding of the best fit for your body type. The aim of choosing the right jeans is to balance your silhouette.

Lean Column: You need to create the illusion of curves around hips and bust and of a waist.

Good Styles are:

Any leg type works from skinny to wide leg. Washes, colour or embellishments work well to add volume to your petite frame. The only leg line that is not as great are a pair of blue pair straight jeans. Also avoid high rise jeans since they won’t give you the needed curves in the waistline.

Neat Hourglass: Best to wear fitted styles.

Good styles are:

The choice is yours, but watch it when choosing a baggy or distressed jeans style. All in moderation otherwise it will back fire.

Full Hourglass: You need to wear shaped styles in order to follow your body line, but avoid bulk and volume around your feminine curves.

Good styles are:

Simple and clean styles such as a classic straight leg are best. A narrowing, baggy or wide leg are tricky options. Say also say no to embellishments, washes or baggy styles.

Apple: Follow your body line – avoid details around bust, tummy and hips. Keep detail in top and lower thirds.

Good styles are:

A straight leg line is your winner. Forget the rest. Stick to clean lines without any extras.

Pear: You need to balance your top half with your lower half by wearing clothes that make your shoulders look broader. Completely the opposite to an inverted triangle.

Good styles are:

Boot cut denim is best and stick to darker colours as well no fuzz and buss in washes, pocket styles or embellishments. You don’t want any attention here.

Inverted Triangle: On your bottom half you need to wear jeans that make your hips look broader, so they balance with your broader shoulders.

Good Jeans styles are:

Add volume to your jeans with elaborate treatments, washes and rinses. The more eye catching and volume they got the better for you. Simple and classic style don’t cut it here.  So, look out for boyfriend style, distressed look, baggy or coloured jeans, details in hip and thigh area e.g. various washes, ripped, embellishments, flared, boot cut, wide leg, turn ups, big back pockets.

Rectangle: You need to create the illusion of a waist

Good styles are:

Lines that will give you curves in your leg work well such as skinny legs, boot cut or flares. Avoid straight leg lines at all cost and be careful with wide leg styles. The can work but not always. Also a big no no to high rise jeans- they will make you look like a brick and highlight the lack of a waist. Choose rounder or slanted pockets on your bum, front or hips.

Michaela

P.S.:

No matter what your figure, a woman really needs at least two lengths of jeans, one to be worn with flats and the other with high-heels. Unless, you want to wearing boots with the jeans tucked inside, or you always roll up the legs and wear flats.

I am a Londoner!

Each area of London has its own chic, look and style personality. They live, eat, drink, buy and listen to different music as well they have different style icons they look up to.

Here is a fashion compass of what to wear where from the East to the West, from the North to the South of London:

East London Girl

It it the living ground of creative minds like artists, architects, fashion designers, musos. The aim is to be someone with an individual look and their own unmistakable style personality. Quite the opposite is here the case. Most important thing is to show and let everyone know that you are part of a selected group-”the it” group. It is the the playing ground of all ” limited editions” in fashion! Therefore you need to apply the key looks to be recognised as such- e.g.the glossy long hair, legs, latest “it” bag and sunglasses. This is the group that adds the polished “it” stamp on a trend.

Jeans- Show your true Colour!

Add character to your jeans with elaborate treatments, rinses and colour.

These offer a cool, retro, chic and the most fashionable take on denim.

  • Nowadays you can pick between many different washes: Dark or chalky rinses, streaks, sandblasting and over-dyed tints are the methods of choice.
  • Use differences in fading and dyeing to your advantage – we all know that dark shades are more slimming than light, but a darker rinse along the inner thighs will also create the illusion of leaner legs.
  • If you don’t have perfectly shaped legs be careful when choosing washes since they will add volume to your leg and accentuate bigger hips, bottoms, thighs and short legs. Less is more here!
  • Stick to finishes that look as natural as possible. Washes that look contrived look wrong. Over-treated jeans appear garish – you want to achieve a naturally worn effect.
  • Distressed Look: There are several different techniques to make the jeans or denim jackets look old and worn. Most of these techniques involve actual sandblasting or abrading by some kind of power tool. Another popular way to make jeans appear damaged is to cut the edges at bottom, pockets, fly and knee area before the (stone)washing.

  • But beware that choosing the right “character” for your jeans needs strategy. You need to put rinses, colour and treatments in context with your bust, body shape, height and proportion. By modifying the lines of your clothing you can create visual balance otherwise you risk adding volume or putting the focus on features that are less flattering. It is not about following about every single trend that is out there but only the ones that work for you.

Understanding Jeans Sizes!

Style is very different from fashion. Once you find something that works, keep it

Tom Ford

There is no universal sizing system. Therefore a lot of manufacturers’ fit guides can be a little on the generous side, so that we can “fit” into a pair one size smaller than our actual size. The psychological effect is obvious. Who wouldn’t swear that these are the best fitting jeans they have ever owned for their size 10 body, even though they are really size 12!

Retailers and manufacturers alike have their own reasons for not wanting a “uniform sizing code”, if such a thing were even possible. And that is to perpetuate the mystique of the perfect fit. They believe that a brand’s “sizing” is an integral part of its identity. It distinguishes one designer from the other in the eyes of the consumer. A Gap jeans fit is very different from a Rock & Republic. They each shoot for a segment of the market that will, when they find them, swear that they are the best jeans ever.

That is the way it should be – just think of how difficult it would be for one brand to satisfy all shapes and sizes, and how dull. That is also why, when we find a brand whose cut, fit and sizing fits us perfectly, we become loyal advocates for his label. The whole sizing mess is unavoidable, because it creates customer loyalty.

My advice is, if they fit, great, it doesn’t matter what the tag says. (I do, however, love the labels!).

My Jeans- The Multitasker!

“Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury”

Coco Chanel

Jeans might be great multitaskers, but even they aren’t miracle workers.

In addition to this you need to think of the right colour.

The darker the colour, the more slimming the jeans are. Go for greys, blacks and dark blue (indigo) if you want to create the illusion of thin legs and hips.

The major choices available at any one time will vary with the current fashion trends and the market a particular manufacturer caters to (teens, juniors, active, urban, etc…). Jeans come in a variety of different:

  • Fits

This refers to how tight, how close to the skin the pants should be worn.

  • Cuts

This refers to the actual shape of the pants (leg, waist and pocket types).

  • Washes and finishes

Usually with the purpose of achieving a soft, worn in look.

  • Fabric options

    Different weaves, weights and compositions.

  • Embellishments

This can be anything; embroidery, rips, studs, etc.

  • Leg types

Shapes/ Styles of your jeans- choose from skinny to a wide leg

This is probably the most important styling decision, because the jeans leg shape needs to reflect  your body shape, so it will give you a flattering silhouette. Here are some examples of leg cuts:
