X-Factor Style Report! 04/05.12.2010

Enough has been said about the fashion styles of Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue. In the words of Yves Saint Laurent: “It pains me physically to see a woman victimized by fashion”.

The white dress by Stéphane Rolland was cut off its original edge and structure. Without its structure it looked more like a baby doll dress. As well her heavy rouge make up and choice of crystral earrings were neither right for the look nor complementing. Her Sunday by Zuhair Muard asymmetrical animal print dress had the correct shape for her inverted triangle body shape but lacking in style for the night. Her whole look was trying too hard trying for edgy elegance and felt simply dated.  Simply no match for Dannii Minogue who had another home run.

Dress Choices for Cheryl

More LBD

Dannii Minogue look on Saturday was simply ” uber” stunning and beautiful. The dress by Aurelio Costarella showed off her beautiful curves and added a bit of old Hollywood Glamour to it. But she kept her look current with the choice of her dropped earrings as well as modern with her upswept hairstyle. Sunday Dannii wowed us in a LBD by .phper Conran with a twist that was a bit of Marilyn Monroe meets Mad Men Fashion. But gave it all a modern edge with her statement earrings. Heads up to Style Queen Dannii!

Alexandra Burke dazzled in a Matthew Williamson crystal-embellished silk-chiffon gown that is right on the money for her pear body shape. The white colour is not ideal for her colouring but she makes it work by wearing her hair open and plus the white goes with the theme of Christmas.

Get the look:

Cher Lloyd outfits were a bit hit and miss. While her second outfit in a menswear androgynous tux and trousers combo(both by River Island and shirt by Topshop) worked like a dream with her girlie hairstyle her first was a too much of everything. Her sheer lace Topshop top, teamed with leather River Island leggings work well on her. But the  Christian Louboutin over-the-knee boots are not right for her short height since they swallow up too much leg line.

Rebecca Ferguson first outfit by Sass & Bide worked in look and style. Though normally the pattern in the lower part would create too much volume on her hips but thanks to the strong shoulder detail in the dress it all comes together in her favour. Her second outfit was a class act by Giambattista Valli. It was right on the money for her body shape and was perfectly styled together in a way that reflected her personality and age. It looked elegant and fresh.

X-Factor Style Report! 20/21.11.2010

Wow- what a X-factor weekend we had again! The emotions are running high with the contestants and judges fashion sense.

Cheryl Cole’s Saturday outfit was by Indian designers Falguni and Shane. Though its neutral colourinsg complemented her personal colouring, the style of dress didn’t suit her inverted triangle body shape since it had too strong features on top. This dress has enough details to shine and didn’t need any more accessorising with stand out earrings as well a chunky ring next to a feather sleeve cuff. Her animal printed shoe choice was overkill . Having said that her make up and hairstyle was fabulous! Cheryl looked absolutely beautiful. Her Sunday outfit was better but as well not a winner for the same reason that the dress was wrong for her body shape. The rest of her look in form of hairstyle and accessories looked the part.

  • More Dress option for Cheryl:

More Maxi Dresses:

Dannii Minouge was leading the way in a dress by Gucci on Saturday.  Her halterneck dress had the perfect loose fit around her waist without adding clutter to her curves. The detail in the halterneck created a beautiful focus in her decoltee line as well provided structure to her shoulder line. Her chunky drop earring provided a beautiful synergy between the colour of her dress and her hair colour. It was a class act. Sunday night Dannii stepped out in one shoulder tiered black dress with a white trim. Though it worked well on her, it was not picture perfect. There were too many black white colour block tieres in the skirt for her short height to cope with. This style is better left for taller women who can afford to appear shorter. The rest of her look was as always a class act.

Rebecca Ferguson wore an outfit by Ossie Clark that was perfect for her pear body shape and her colouring. Her styling reflected not only the dress style but as well her own style personality. Top marks for this look

More garments in red:

Katie Waissels has a new look.  We have a tendency to embrace things, because they are new. But new is not always a better solution. I don’t like the new ” Audrey Hephurn look”, because it is aging her and taking the spark out of her personality. It’s like  she was stripped off her personality. Having said that the whole look from hairstyle to dress and shoe choice worked – but it’s not for her.

Cher Lloyed goes from girl with attitude to girlie! I can’t wrong foot the outfit and look. My comments are a personal opinion on the transformation, that is not credible and not doing her justice. As an artist it is not only important to capture the “Zeitgeist” of fashion and style, but also apply it to your personality and age, so you put it altogether to a signature look. As well here the whole girlie look is well put together, but it feels like it is Cher is in disguise.

X-Factor Style Report! 6/7.11.2010

I am starting to be at my wits end when watching the styling on the X-factor. As previously reported by MailOnline, Cheryl Cole is styled by Frank Strachan, known as the ‘Ferrari of stylists’, with her budget for hair and make-up said to be an astonishing £80,000 and clothes £70,000. How come that a young beautiful, successful woman with such a budget for a wardrobe is getting it wrong every single time she is taking to the stage. The only time she nailed her look when she was performing her new single.  No surprise that her dress choice was black- again- but what did she wear and with what did she accessorise it with? Her Emilio Pucci short asymmetric hemline and lace paneling failed to impress. It was the right choice for her inverted triangle body shape but her look can’t be described as anything but tacky.  This fluffy hairband with her open hair doesn’t go with such lace paneled lingerie dress- it is a look that you want to go for when being private than public on stage. As well the earrings are not only wrong in style but really over kills her look.  She could have safed the dress by wearing her hair up, keeping the earring loosing the hairband and wearing red killer heels! Unfortunately nobody asked me, but maybe she will listen what Coco Chanel has to say:

“When accessorising always take off the last thing you put on”

Sunday was as well not a great fashion outing for her when she stepped out in a gold, short asymmetrical Bodyamr dress. The metallic look in her dress and shoes was perfect. It is great for her colouring. Also, her hair do was super. But the style of the dress was completely wrong for her body shape. She needs to keep the drama and attention to the lower half of her body and not visa versa otherwise her shoulders are simply looking broader. Plus wearing these “look at me” earrings are not helping her shape.   But the worst fashion offence was wearing these earrings in the first place! Why would you add any attention seeing earrings to a dress that has a turtle neckline?  Anyone knows you never layer sparkle on sparkle! It really ruined her look and made it look tacky again.

Dannii Minogue didn’t get it all right as well on Saturday. The colour of her Philip Armstrong dress was spot on fashion dress but the attached oversized bow was killing it. It is the perfect example why a full hourglass can’t wear a high neckline as well can’t cope any fuzz and details on the bust. It makes her top heavy. Plus the oversized bow shows as well that this detail is overpowering her short height. Details need to stay in tune and proportion with her height in order to create the illusion to make her look taller. Having said her hairstyle was again so spot on.  Its playfulness played down the dressiness of her dress.

Sunday night Dannii came back fighting and totally rocked in her black black three-quarter-length corseted Dolce & Gabbana dress. It is absolutely perfect for a full hourglass body shape, because it is simply following her curves. Combined with her relaxed hairstyle she played down the “sexiness” of the dress and made it look classy and fabulous! When looking at Dannie Minogue past fashion style it embodies what Coco Chanel meant when she said:

“Look for the woman in the dress. If there is no woman, there is no dress.

I am not sure as well what the X-factor stylist were thinking when styling the contestants.

Rebecca Ferguson blew us away again with her singing and make up, but the choice of dress was a crime for her pear body shape. A total misfit that accentuates her lower half and keeps no attention to her top. It should be completely the other way around.

Better dress choices:

Kate Moss metallic maxi dress:

More maxi dresses:

Katie Waissel outfit and look flattered her shape and colouring on Saturday. The thing that didn’t look right was her wig. Not only was she seen in it the week before but the wig looked as well too obvious. Also her dress on Sunday looked good on her. It was just again the wig that made it look all messy and dated.

Click for more leather trousers:

Treyc Cohen outfit never matches her shape, fashion and occasion. First of all white clothes and “snow white” looks are reserved in the UK only for summer and Christmas. Plus two nights in a row wearing the same colour? Not to mention it really doesn’t work at all for her colouring at all. She looks better in deeper and darker colours rather in lighter colours that are close to her face. It is washing her out. Her Saturday night gown worked for her petite height and short neck. The solid colour  made a her look longer and her strapless dress that kept the attention away from her short neck. They shouldn’t have skipped as well the necklace for the same reasons. Unfortunately the style was completely wrong for her body shape. They should have chosen an Empire line dress that would have been more flattering for her thighs rather than going for a waist dress with its panels going out on her fullest part of her body and adding negative attention on it. As well her Sunday outfit was a total misfit for her body shape. Firstly it had far too much clutter for her short height with the result it made her look fuller, because it overpowered her but as well it was not complementing her thighs.

Better dress choices:

Click for more strapless dresses:

Cher Lloyed looks on Saturday night were a mixture of the old Cher and what she is turning into : A copy of Cheryl.  Her make up and her hairstyle is complete copy of Cheryl. I liked the idea of leather trousers but not in white for the reasons above. I loved the pink leather jacket and her ovesized blue necklace but her trainers are really not working with the theme and colour palette. I get the part of opposite attracts but that is simply a style clash! Her Sunday look was so much better, because it was more of a credible choice for her age and style personality. Plus the colour choices and style fell into place for her. The only thing which didn’t work for me was her hair- too grown up – too much Cheryl- and not enough Cher!

On a personal I was very disappointed about the whole conduct on Sunday by most of the judges. Simon Cowell always said in the past that the X-factor was a singing competition but last Sunday he said word for word on Sunday night, that Treyc Cohen was the better singer and Katie Waissel the better performer. Staying in tune with his previous comments he should have stayed by his guns and voted Katie off. Though I understand Cheryl’s motive not to vote, but rules are rules and can’t be bent to ones favour otherwise we got the situation one rule for one and one rule for others- how can be that fair and just?

X-factor Style Report!-30/31.10.2010

Danni Minogue is simply fashion savy. The deep deep colour is a knock out for her colouring and great choice for a Halloween night.

46861, LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Saturday October 30 2010. Dannii MInogue leaving the Fountain Studios, London, following The X Factor Halloween special.Photograph: PacificCoastNews.com

Her red glossy peep hole shoes add shine and go with the theme of wearing a strapless dress and by keeping it all in red adding height to her petite height. The style of the dress by Marchesa is perfect for her full hourglass figure but the draping of it is too much for her body shape and short height. It is adding unnecessary volume to her lower part and is also visually shortening her. This much detailing from top to toe is best left for women who are tall and can break them up with their height. As well all this detailing is best for women who have less curves and who need the fuss and buzz to add more volume and roundness to their body shape. Her choice in hairstyle is again spot on. Firstly it is adding edge to the elegant cocktail dress but also keeping it current by going in style with the theme of Halloween. Her Sunday night dress is good but again not picture perfect.  The dress is not fitting her very well on her hips and creates unnecessary creases on the hips that add volume to her hips and thighs. The one shoulder dress by Project Dstyle is great for full hourglass but not with such a long wide sleeveline, because its fuller part is ending on her curves and add additional fullness to it. It would have been better to keep the sleeveline fitted no matter if wrist or 3/4 length. Important for a full hourglass is to follow your curves and avoid additional fullness in bulk and details. The black colour works for her, because the one shoulder dress shows skin and takes the harshness out of it. Her natural hairstyle tunes down the dressiness of the sequin cocktails and makes it look youthful and in the moment. She simply looks at ease and comfortable. And that is exactly what fashion is all about. Feeling comfortable and at ease in the clothes you wear.

Alternative dresses for Danii:

It never fails to amaze me that someone like Cheryl Cole is getting it so right with her music, but so wrong with her fashion style. She is young, beautiful and has an army of helpers to pick her outfits and decide on her look. Her Jonathan Saunders dress choice worked for her inverted triangle body shape. It kept the attention to the lower half of the body and balanced it with her shoulders. But what didn’t work was her hairstyle. It needed to look sharp and sleek by pulling it away from her face either by having a pony tail or by wearing it up. As well her choice of earrings were wrong. Firstly they were to matchy in colour with the dress and secondly she chooses always the same style of drop or pom pom earrings. Overall her styling looked dated and was aging her. Cheryl’s Sunday outfit by Ina Soltani was as well not a winner. The dress style is completely wrong for her body shape. The dress is having all the buzz on top, that doesn’t flatter her shape. But I must say I loved  its colours. It worked for her despite having a red hair colour, because she wore it up and away from her face. It is such a nice break from her constant black or white dress choices. No surprise again in her choice of pom pom earrings. Also, her styling choices was disappointing as well to the theme of “Halloween” last weekend.

How to wear pencil skirts?

The pencil skirt first designed by Christian Dior in the late 1940′s has made a huge comeback- which is partly thanks to Victoria Beckham’s so successful label that features mostly a pencil skirt in her dresses. The classic straight or tulip curve hugging skirt can be worn in many different hem and waist lengths to achieve a variety of looks.  The ideal fit should hug the curves of the body yet still have some give.

In contrary to many rumours the pencil skirt is not versatile for many body shapes no matter how you accessorise it. You can change the tone by wearing a T-shirt versa a blouse, but it won’t change the rules about who can and who shouldn’t wear it.

Best practise for how to wear a pencil skirts

It is not in its nature to provide a style fix, but instead to highlight your curves and put them in plain view. Since it is following your body shape it will either complement your curves or do the exact opposite. Furthermore is only a choice for women with great shaped legs. It is a must for this fashion style. The rule of thumb is the narrower the skirt and the more style details it has the slimmer the leg shape must be in order to be put on display. The hemline of a pencil skirt can vary, but keep in mind the longer it is the longer the leg line must be in order to keep the theme and shape of the pencil skirt. Also not a style that will work well on plus sizes.

Neat hourglass

Neat hourglass body shapes will look perfect in this garment since it will show off their balanced body, no matter if the garments comes with style details such as pleats or pockets or embellishments or in different patterns. A higher waist line or waistband will look great to underline their waist and show off their balanced body.

Full hourglass

It is fabulous choice for the full hourglass body shape. But since it has already curves they don’t need any additional attention such as details or volume in their pencil skirt. A plain skirt works best that is mid or high waisted to give them best fit and shape combined with a back vent so it gives them room and looks visually less cramped.

Apple

A clear no here.  It will figure hug in a very unflattering way the tummy area.No matter how plain the skirt or how low or high the waistline is. It doesn’t do anything for them even if they have a great pair of legs to show. This is not a style for them.

Inverted Triangle

It can work, but it needs some tweaking. Since they have a broader upper and a slimmer hips they need to add volume and attention to their lower part, so that the pencil skirt can visually show off curves rather figure hugging their slimmer part and make them look unbalanced.  A plain style is never going to work. The more style details such as pleats, panels and/ or embellishments the better. Colour or vertical colour blocks work wonder. Also choose a straighter hemline over a tulip style, because one  will visually broaden the lower part while the other will narrow it.

Pear

A big no no!  A pear carries their volume on the lower part and a pencil skirt will do them no favour except highlighting their fullest part and make them look unbalanced versa their top half. A pencil skirt doesn’t belong into a wardrobe of a pear shape woman. Full stop.

Rectangle

Not ideal but it can work. The Rectangle body shape does n’t have a waist, so when choosing a pencil skirt go for a low rise waist and avoid any details in the waist line area such as a waistband or colourblock. It will make you look boxy and show off your straightness in your waist. Also, try to choose styles that have panels, pleats in the hip area so it creates the needed roundness.  Choose floral or animal print patterns over checks or dead straight plain styles.

Lean Column

A lean column is more or less the slimmer shape of a rectangle. A similar rules applies here. While a rectangle needs curves a lean column needs as well fullness. So any styles that hits these criteria will work. The more attention in details and pattern the better. But also stay clear of styles that has too strong waist definition – unless it add volume to it and not showing its slim straightness.

Animal Prints Know How!

Explore your territory by choosing the right type and size of  prints at the right place of your body at the right place and time! Animal prints create attention, focus and add visual volume. So, make sure you know your body shape and body size before you start to shop for them.

Know how for Animal Prints

  • Animal prints create attention, focus and add visual volume to your body shape and/ or body part . So, make sure you know your body shape and body size before you start to shop for them.
  • The print size should correspond with your body size. Bigger prints are best for women who are tall and plus size. While smaller prints are better for short and petite build women.
  • Less is more. Don’t try to over complicate the look by combining it with other fashion trends. Animal print should ideally complement your look- set a tone – rather competing with other styles.
  • Make sure you look current by choosing the right accessories with the animal print. Animal print can look quickly dated when paired with the wrong items.
  • Dress your age! Rule of thumb: The louder the younger the wearer.
  • Calve Size: Women with a big calves should avoid any calf or kneeboots and stiletto heels. Instead choose ankle boots with an average to bigger heel.
  • Scarves: Great for women who have a good neck. But less good for women with a short or/and wide neck. Also, not an ideal choice for women with a big bust.

Fashion tips for animal prints:

They are sleek, chic, multicoloured and come in many variations. They will add always a powerful and confident note to its wearer.

Zebra Prints

  • A black & white colour combination that can look harsh on the wrong wearer. It is best for women who have the following dominant colouring: Light, Deep, Clear. It is best left for the younger generation- unless you are choosing this animal print in accessories.
  • It creates a stylish outfit combination and spices up any elegant outfit.
  • Elegant and suitable for any type of events- including work – as long as being appropriate.
  • Dress code: Dress up and never for dressing down.

Leopard prints

  • Regular prints are coming in darkbrown combined with neutral colours. Great for women with the following dominant colouring: Soft, warm and deep. The more the print contains a white and black colour combination rather a neutral and brown one the more it is suitable for women who’s dominant colouring is light, clear and cool.
  • It will add a sensual, seductive and glamorous look. A look that is best kept appropriate for the occasion.
  • A favourite among the glamorous and romantic style personalities.
  • Dress code: A softer choice than then the zebra print and works well with a casual look- but nevertheless stylish.

Snake skin prints

  • They come in multi colours and depending which colouring combination they have it will depend who can wear. The thumb rule here is again: The bolder the print the better for women with light, cool and clear colouring.
  • It creates a mysterious look that exudes elegance.
  • Mostly favoured by women who have a classic personality and choose a chic style for day & night and for work & play.
  • Dress code:  It requires elegance in your outfit. No matter what.

Last thought of food: Animal prints need to be worn always sharp since they add an edge to your outfit. It goes with the theme:-)

Leggings Love!

Another fashion trend that doesn’t go away this season. One can even say its fashion is even bolder than ever before. As much as we fall in love with the look of a leggings we need to stay focused and keep the fact in our mind that leggings fashion is only for the women who can show off their legs. It requires perfectly shaped legs- preferably skinny legs so they can deal and add all the drama to their legs, that will create the extra volume . In order to be able to show off designs and patterns one better have as well a long pair of legs.

A visually balanced body, regardless of weight or height, always looks most flattering. Legs and calves come in different sizes and shapes and each variation requires a different styling and dressing guide.

Dressing your legs and calves requires a strategy, because you need to have an understanding of your build, you need to put the size of your calves in context with your bust, body shape, height and proportion (ie do you have a balanced body? A longer body with shorter legs? A short body with longer legs?). By modifying the lines of your clothing you can create visual balance whether you have small or large calves.

In short here are the rules for leggings fashion:

  • In general the stronger the pattern the longer and smaller the leg the better. Click here for more info how to dress your leg line
  • The same rule applies for calves Click here for more on calf sizes and how to dress them
  • Leggings are better for women who have either a balanced body or a shorter body and longer legs since leggings will shorten visually the legline. The stronger the pattern the better. Therefore women with a longer body and shorter legs should stay clear of this trend. It takes too much tweaking to make it work.
  • Any horizontal lines will shorten your leg line and add additional roundness to your legs and calves.

The rest should stay clear and focus on other fashion trends that are more suitable to your build.  Opt for hoisery that tunes our leg line down rather than puts it on full display.

How to find the perfect fitting jacket for you!

Jackets have become  our Wardrobe Heroes – our champions as much as Jeans are today’s multitaskers.  No matter what you we wear for work, day to to day or pleasure our jacket pulls our style, look, mood and personality together.  By adding a jacket to our outfit we are giving it our signature look and feel.  It is like the icing on the cake. Therefore choosing our jackets is an essential  and emotional love affair.

Photo by: JP/AAD/starmaxinc.com 2010 5/19/10 Kate Moss attends the Topshop Store Launch Party. (London, England) Photo via Newscom

In order to make this love affair an ever lasting one, here are some key notes to remember the next time you going shopping:

  • A jacket has to suit your dominant colour.
  • It has to follow your body shape.
  • It has to reflect your body size whether being tall, short, plus size or petite.
  • The jacket has to be comfortable to wear- otherwise you won’t feel confident in it.

Here are some guide lines for each body shape on what to look for in a jacket:

Neat Hourglass: You are the most flexible one and therefore take advantage of any details and colours.

Full Hourglass: Focus on your curves and stay away away from any fuzz. Less is more here!

Apple: Avoid any volume and attention at your fullest point. Balance your fullest point with the top as well as with the bottom. Stay away from any double breasted styles.

Pear: Focus on attention, buzz and details on top. Choose Empire styles for best fit. Avoid hemline and pockets that finish on your hips.

Inverted Triangle: As always the rules are the complete opposite to a Pear. Keep the drama to your lower part. Avoid any shoulder details or cropt styles.Opt instead for boy fried jackets.

Rectangle: Main focus is to create the illusion of a waist. Cropt jackets or Empire styles are good as well as single breasted ones. But never ever choose a double breasted version. It will make you look boxy.

Lean Column: Add curves is your mantra. So look for shoulder pads, deep necklines, Empire or cropped styles . Single breasted styles are great as well double breasted as long as they are not too chunky and carry styles that will add curves to your shape. Avoid styles that are dead straight and make you longer and leaner.

Here are some guidelines for each body size what to look for in a jacket:

Petite: You are petite in your build. So, avoid any chunky styles and patterns. It will overpower your you.

Plus Size: Avoid fitted styles and too many details at your fullest part. Best are loose fitted styles.

Short: You have to elongate your height. Great are Empire styles as well as styles that keep details to the top.

Tall: You can afford to break your height with many patterns, details and colour blocks. Avoid styles that are solid in colour and have no features.
