Lace is a fashion trend that doesn’t go away. Sometimes it is limited to certain garments but this season it can be found in any possible garments from dresses, jackets, skirts, tights, corsets, scarves to shoes and so on. So, the good news is that we can choose the amount of lace we like to wear and where we like to wear it. But it is a trend that divides us women.
So, the question is how to wear lace right. This trend can be tricky when not handled with care. Lace can make you look stylish and elegant or if you got it wrong tired and dated. I believe every one should be doing a bit of lace, but with caution that is right for the body shape, occasion and age.
Know how to wear lace right and current:
- One has to rise to its occasion!
Lace is a delicate, stylish, light fabric but also has a very dressy nature and therefore worn best and only for formal & dressy occasions. That means you need to look groomed, together and stylish. It is very unforgiving when wearing it casual and without any grooming whatsoever.
- Lace on bare skin!
Something you should always avoid is a lace dress or skirt on bare legs- it will hardly ever work. Since it is a very dressy material only young skin and a perfect leg shape will be able to match it. So, for all the rest of us let’s opt for nice tights that will complement the lace outfit without competing with it.
- Less is more!
Keep it simple by choosing only one lace item at a time and never combine it with another fashion trend. Keep it in focus!
- Lace in colour!
Very tricky that is! It is a vintage and an elegant fabric, so it looks best in the traditional colours such as black, black & red, black & nude, nude and white. Each of these colour combinations has its tone and should be worn in context. In general white is best to be left for weddings only or white shirts. Nude lace works great for underwear, while black & red will always add sex appeal to your look while simply black will add elegance to your outfit. Lace combined with colours such as pink, blue, yellow etc. will most likely “make it look cheap” unless is you are a teenager who will get away more or less with anything due to their youth.
- Keep it fresh and current!
Combine it with other plain and/or elegant items e.g. white shirt, pencil skirt, over the knee hight boots, studs shoes/belt/bag, jeggins, slim fitted jeans, leather jacket/skirt or dress. Though the 80′s are back, please don’t accessorise it with pearls or with heavy gold metal jewellery. You will only create a dated look.
