My Cropped Leather Jacket!

The cropped Jacket is having a big comeback as they are the perfect companion for spring , to update your look and add an edge to your outfit. It’s a great investment purchase, because it is such a versatile classic item for spring and summer, that you can always put it to use with any outfit or for any occasion.. Plus they are very figure flattering – but not everyone will feel the same.

Here some tips how to wear your cropped Leather Jacket:

  • Waist Issue

The cropped jackets flatter always someone with a waist. The longer the waist the better. While women who have a short waist need to avoid any details such as belts in the hemline because they do not have enough space to pull it off. It won’t look visually balanced but very cramped .Women who have a rectangle or lean column body shape need to choose cropped leather jackets with a curved hemline rather than a straight one in order to create the illusion of a waist. Women who are apples or plus sizes should avoid this trend since the hemline will finish on their fullest part. In general they are the best friends for pears, neat hour glasses and for women of petite body size. While inverted triangle won’t see eye to eye with this style and trend since it works agains their body shape, because they simply will highlight their broader shoulders and do nothing for their visual balance.

  • Height Issue

Cropped Leather Jackets are great for short and tall women. One hand the cropped style will lengthen the legline of someone who is short- as long they opt for a tone to look- especially on the lower half. But also it will shorten visually someone who is tall, when they opt for a layering or colour blog look.

  • Neck

Women with a short or short/ wide neck need look out for styles that have lower lapels, flat collars and no shoulder details. The higher the collar the more volume it will add to the neck and also will highlight that feature. This style is much better suited for women with normal or long neck.

  • Bust

Women with a small bust can’t have enough drama, details and volume on the jacket. While women with a fuller bust need to avoid any drama e.g. studs or embellishments at lapels or in the bust area since it will add more volume to their fuller bust.

My lovely red shoes!

No matter your age, dominant colour, body shape – red shoes simply work magic on every outfit.  They are timeless whatever the season or occasion.  They not only transform you from the inside by affecting how you feel about yourself but they will make you look more confident on the outside, transforming every single outfit – they’ll be the icing on the cake! Every woman should own a pair of red shoes.

Beyonce Knowles exudes glamour at the launch of her new fragrance, Heat, at Macy's

They are a classic and a must have in every woman’s wardrobe as the “little black” dress.

Here are some tips to watch out when buying yourself a pair of red shoes:

  • Your calf size: Red shoes are bringing attention to your legline and calf size. So when you have a bigger calf opt for chunkier heel options or if you want to play safe go for a wedge heel. Also, avoid any straps – especially the tiny ankle straps- around your ankle. It will bring out the contrast between your big calf and the tiny ankle strap.  Opt for a chunkier strap versions altogether and choose slingbacks before any shape of ankle straps.
  • When you are short you need to elongate your legline. So it is always better to choose a shoe with a heel and avoid flat shoes unless they are meant for sport, beach or similar activities.
  • Women with an apple, full hourglass or pear shape body shape will look better in pointed, square or rectangle shaped shoes. While women who are a lean column or rectangle will be better looking in rounder shaped shoes than square or rectangle ones.
  • Also, have a pedicure before putting your feet on display in sandals or any form of open shoes. Otherwise it will get the wrong impact.

The good soldier!

Yes, the military styling and chic has staying power and is one of the key trends this summer. Double breasted coats, buckles, camouflage prints, safari jacket, vests, and boots are the staples of this trend with strong shoulder shapes and button detailing- but not for everyone is the military look good news. Some will excel in this trend, others have to pick the right pieces that work for their body shape,- size  and features. Others have to skip this trend altogether because the structure, detailing or colour simply doesn’t work for them.

Balmain Fashion Show - Paris

Some tips how to wear it:

  • Military jackets have to sit straight. So, great news for the flat chested women- especially the higher the neckline. Therefore women with a bust should pass on this one. The shoulder details like straps and buttons are great for women with a long neck but bad news for the ones with a short and/or wide  neck.  It is great for pears, neat hourglasses and lean columns. While apples and inverted triangle should stay away from this trend.
  • Camouflage trousers or trousers with lots of zippers are fantastic for women who are tall have longs and small calves. These women can deal with all the details and additional volume to that part of the body. While short women, big thighs and big calves should never wear them.  Inverted triangle, neat hourglass, lean column, rectangle are best suited to pull these features off. While a pear shouldn’t wear it since it adds more volume to their already bigger lower half and it is too much clutter for an apple though most of them have good legs. Since they have more volume on top they have to opt for “quieter” loose fit on their lower half.
  • Vests, jackets and coats can be single or double breasted. Double breasted are great for the small busted women while not at all for the ones who have a bigger bust.  In general a double breasted jacket is ideal for pears, neat hourglass, lean columns while single breasted for full hourglass, rectangles ( double breasted types will make them look even boxier!) and apple should always avoid any buttoning in their tummy area.
  • The military trend comes mostly in nude, camouflage, white or blue colours. Clears and cools should opt for the navy and white options instead, while it will work great on the softs and warms.  Lights will be quite flexible on any of these colours while the deeps need to ensure that they wear a deeper colour near their face.

Oscars 2010!

Finally the dresses of the night and the winners of the Oscars 2010 were revealed.  Most of time when watching these type of events I am reminded of the fairy tale ”the emperor has no clothes “.  Nobody is telling the truth- everyone is dodging the bullet and looking left, right and over their shoulders – or they simply put the vote out to their readers in order to avoid telling us what they really think . Nobody wants to voice their opinion either because they might get it wrong, or their judgment wouldn’t be popular or they would be outed for not having a clue why dresses do or don’t work- of course until someone says it out loud- then everyone jumps ship.  Plus their comments are always  ” I like, I love, I hate, looks like…, she shouldn’t…” This is not very useful  for a review.  In a review you want to know why the dress colour, shape and style works for the actress . So, let’s get started:

1. Kate Winslet in Yves Saint Laurent

82ND ACADEMY AWARDS, RED CARPET ARRIVALS
Colour: A wonderful colour combination for a soft in her dominant colour. The metallic look is kept muted by wearing it away from her face and by going for a silver gold combination.
Body shape: A bustier/ corsage is ideal for a fullhourglass body shape, because it shows off her curves in her bust, hips and gives way to her waist. The peplum highlights her hips and balances perfectly with her shoulders. The skirt drapes beautifully around her bottom- without being too tight.
Overall look: 5***** The colour combination of silver and gold is spot on. It gives it a modern but still a feminine look. Her look in this outfit looks effortless chic, elegant and timeless.

2. Kathryn Bigelow in Yves Saint Laurent

82ND ACADEMY AWARDS, RED CARPET ARRIVALS
Colour: This silver colour is far too light for her colouring. She is a deep and needs to choose deeper colours near her face.
Body shape: This dress is not a good fit on her. Firstly because someone who is as tall as her should never be wearing an Empire oufit. It makes her look even taller and her legline endless. Secondly the lower part of her dress doesn’t particular address and balance her broader shoulders. Thirdly it doesn’t fit around the tummy aera. The popping out seams do not flatter her. Last not least wearing a solid colour from top to toe is never ideal for a tall woman since it gives it additional height- what she doesn’t need. She needs a dress that shortens her height visually by colour, style or both.
Overall look:  2** She is the woman of the moment- and quite right so for her achievement. Unfortunately her dress lets her down since it didn’t complement her colour, shape and height.
3.  Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta

Photo by: W6005Y/AAD/starmaxinc.com 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 3/7/10 Cameron Diaz at the 82
Colour: The golden embellishment softens the white and makes it to a wonderful choice for her colouring.
Body shape: The waisted dress gives her lean coloumn body shape the illusion of a waist, the embellishments add volume to her top body and the fuller skirt gives her curves.
Overall look: 4**** The best look I have seen on her for long time.  I just find that her look and style is not only playing safe but reminds me too much of Michelle Pfeiffer- it lacks originality.

4. Vera Farmigain in Marchesa

Photo by: RE/Westcom/starmaxinc.com 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 3/7/10 Vera Farmiga at the 82
Colour: Superb colour for a clear This shiny plum dress creates a wonderful contrast to her coluring and brings her stunning bright blue eyes even more out to play.
Body shape: This dress can only be worn by a few fortunate women who are a neat hourglass in their body shape, long in her waist and who are tall. She is  all this! The details on top fit beautifully around her bust and the ruche has enough room in her waist to shine and to show it off. Its fullness  flatters nicely her leg line without cluttering it. The only clutter that occurs is in the hemline because it is too long in front.
Overall look: 4**** Her hairstyle, make up and dress choice is super fashion forward and shouts personality.  The only mistake in her outfit is the hemline in front- it layers too much in front of her.  A dress needs to look comfortable , be easy to walk in and move easily- which this doesn’t.
5. Demi Moore in Versace

Celebrities make their arrivals on the red carpet at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on March 7, 2010 in Hollywood, California. Pictured: Demi Moore Fame Pictures, Inc
Colour: It is not a great colour for a deep. It is far too light for her even thought she is wearing her hair pulled back.
Body shape: Just look at her. She is a champion choosing this dress for the event.  This strapless dress is ideal for someone who has boader shoulders, because the drama is kept on the lower haf, so it diverts the attention from the top to the lower half instead and creates visual balance at the same time. Her long waist is being underlined perfectly, so that the dress creates perfect proportions for her.
Overall look: 4****: Her hairstyle and looks are wonderful and very in the moment. Who knows what makes her look so youthful. Just the colour of her dress isn’t quite right for her.
6. Mariah Carey in Valentino

Photo by: RE/Westcom/starmaxinc.com 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 3/7/10 Mariah Carey at the 82
Colour: Good colour for her personal colouring and body shape.
Body shape: No. She is an inverted triangle in her body shape with a big bust. Therefore the dropped sleeveline makes her shoulder look even broader and as well as her bust. Unfortunately there is nothing on her lower half to balance that out. She looks very top heavy and unproportional. The broche is a nice touch but not a strong enough feature to create visual balance with her top.
Overall look: 1* Simply she looks always the same- always the same hair and earrings.  Her shoes don’t go with the dress or with her accessories.  As much as important a signature looks is you need to be versatile and adapt to different times and trends.
7. Elizabeth Banks in Versace

82ND ACADEMY AWARDS, RED CARPET ARRIVALS
Colour: This ash grey/blue works beautifully with her skin and ash blonde hair.
Body shape: It fits like a glove on her neat hourglass body shape. Her long waist is shown off by the pattern in the waist and sets perfect proportion for the upper and lower part of the gown. The layers in the skirt and train flatter her leg line without adding clutter to it.
Overall look:  4****A bit Gwyneth Paltrow like just not in pink. Her look is beautiful but the style is too mainstream a la Hollywood.
8.Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture

82ND ACADEMY AWARDS, RED CARPET ARRIVALS
Colour: Fantastic choice for her colouring. This purple violet combination really plays up to her hair, skin and eye colour.
Body shape: She is tall and a neat hourglass and this mermaid dress with its contrasting train is idealfor that.  It wouldn’t clutter on a shorter woman, withsomeone with a fuller bust or shorter waist.
Overall look:  3*** The style is not as wrong as much more an error in judgement. This style of dress you don’t wear to the Oscars, but more to the Cannes Festivals. It’s a a bit too “ovious” and in your “face” and therefore it feels inappropriate for this event.
9. Jennifer Lopez in Armani Prive

Celebrities make their arrivals on the red carpet at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on March 7, 2010 in Hollywood, California. Pictured: Jennifer Lopez Fame Pictures, Inc
Colour: Not picture perfect. It is a bit too white for her colouring.
Body shape: Pears are smaller on top and bigger on the bottom. Though you need to emphasise your upper body to balance the bottom – this dress still kind of works for her.  It blows up at her fullest part without sitting on her bottom or thighs. Therefore her fullest part is ” hidden” away by the cut and style of her fuller skirt. It brings out her beautiful waist, but the dramatic cut in her skirt length does cut her leg line too much. She is too short for such a style.
Overall look: 3***Her youthful hairstyle- ” Jenny from the blog” contrasts nicely to the very formal dress in cut and shape and makes her look current. She should have chosen different shoes, bags and jewellery. It looks to much of a wedding gown and outfit.

10. Carey Mulligan in Prada

Oscars 2010 - RED CARPET
Colour: She makes black work for her by keeping it away from her face and having a short hairstyle.
Body shape: The upper part of the the dress works like a dream on her slender body.  The cropped full skirt makes her leg line look too short including the choice of her ankle strap shoes. It would have helped to lengthen her leg line visually by having chosen pumps instead of ankle strap style shoes and keeping the edge in the heel.
Overall look:  3 ***I love the edge and twist in the dress and her style. Unfortunately it goes wrong in her leg line and also she wore the same style of dress to the Baftas.

11. Diane Kruger in Chanel

HOLLYWOOD - MARCH 07: Actress Diane Kruger arrives at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards held at Kodak Theatre on March 7, 2010 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)Colour: This ivory white black dress works great for a soft.

Bodyshape: Her perfect neat hourglass body shape works perfectly on this very complicated dress in style and shape. You need to have a long neck, waist, long legs and be slender at the right places in order to deal with all the details and frill of the dress.

Overall Look: 5***** I love the dress, the shape, style and her whole look. It is different, it has leading style rather being a follower and it is right on target with the fashion trend “white”. Though this dress divides opinions and one journalist defined it as toilet paper roll, it still doesn’t take the fact away that it works for her.

12. Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals
Colour: What superb combination for her colouring. The grey blue embellishment creates contrast with the yellow shiny dress. Exactly what a clear needs.
Body shape: This long shift dress works nicely on her beautiful petite frame and since she is keeping the colour contrast to the top of her dress it lengthens her visually. The decoltee detail adds attention to her bust without overpowering it.
Overall look: 5***** And the winner is …! That’s how it is done. This dress is classy but given a modern, innovative touch with her hairstyle and bracelets. Even her shoes are kept in style with her dress.  Its style reminds one of the Halston brand .
13. Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka

82nd Annual Academy Awards Red Carpet Arrivals
Colour: Wonderful choice of colour for a cool. It brings out her hair colour, skin and eye colour.
Body shape: She is a full hourglass and it is all about shape. At her age as well about loose fit. This dress follows her body curves down to a T. Her arms are beautifully covered, which gives her sharp silouhette.
Overall look: 5***** Her look is kept sharp with her hairstyle and accessories, but also current with her red lipstick. She is giving some women a good run for their money!
14. Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals
Colour: The colour works well with her deep colouring.
Body shape: What happened here? She is a fantastic neat hourglass figure and therefore it should be an easy thing to dress her- but she is short in height. Her bustline is badly fitted and therefore goes almost in a  straight line into her waist rather following it. These horizontal drapes are the killer for someone who is short in height. It cuts their frame even further down- and they really can’t afford to loose any length. The fitted top is for someone designed in mind who is tall because it should finish on her hips and not on her thighs as it does on Penelope.  She could wear the top half as a mini dress. Therefore the full skirt looks absolutely unproportional to the upper half.  It is not only shorter than the top but also the hemline is too long billows unflattering in front of her.
Overall Look: 1* It is to me the most dissapointing outfit of the night. Someone who is as beautiful and perfectly figured as Penelope shouldn’t never been seen in such a badly fitted dress. Even the colour is wrong . It would have been maybe more suitable for a winter occasion, but not with the new season ahead of us. It is ageing her in style and look. It is a crime really to let her step out like this. Especially since she is normally always one of the best dressed.
15. Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van Noten

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals
Colour: What a contrast in her dress- spot on for her personal colouring.
Body shape: The pattern adds volume to her bust but is small enough not to add ” dents” to the print. Also her shape is slender, so the prints ” hang” straight from her silhouette.  The dress has a touch of a waist silhouette, so it doesn’t overpower her petite waist.
Overall look:  5***** It is another winner of the night. It is fresh, modern, young and current- and as well unique. She looks absolutely at ease and comfortable in it.

White Things!

White is always a spring/ summer trend. It never goes out of fashion. What changes is how you wear it, what you wear it with and which of the latest items you accessorise it with.

As secure and safe it might sound to buy white there are a lot of mine fields to step into. Many of us are so concerned with the latest fashion trends and items that a lot of us forget that a fashion trend doesn’t only have to suit your body shape, size and colouring but also the occasion, weather and season. You just can’t wear all the fun and colour of spring and summer when it is cold and raining outside. It makes you look sad and desperate and turns someone who is a fashion savvy into a fashion victim, because they can’t adopt to the weather condition. Fashion is only fashion when it not only looks right on you but also when you look comfortable and at ease.  Something  you never feel when trembling of being cold, getting wet and soaked because not dressed for it, getting all the dirt on your white outfit that comes with bad weather. White is a colour that requires sunshine to come out to its full potential- in cold or warm weather. Also, white only looks good when it looks white and clean otherwise you look very quickly shabby in your outfit.

A solid white outfit is not always a winner for everyone’s colouring;

Dominant Colour Light:

A fantastic choice. You can wear white from top to to if you like and if it is appropriate.

Dominant Colour Deep:

Not best to wear it as solid colour near your face, because it is too light for you and it will wash you out. Unless you wear your e.g. white top or shirt with a jacket or coat in a deeper colour. The deeper colour has always be stronger or in majority versa the white colour. Or to be sure keep keep the white to your lower half.

Dominant Colour Warm:

It is a bit of tricky one. If you got porcelain skin and red hair the pure white will provide a good contrast to your hair. But if you don’t have that type of skin it will easily clash with that and your hair together. Therefore you need to “warm” the white with yellow driven colours such as brown, green, orange, yellow, coral, tomato red etc- meaning you need to combine it with any of these type of colours when wearing white.

Dominant Colour Cool:

One of the best colour and absolutely must for this group. It will balance your white hair and make any outfit sharper- especially when wearing some nude/neutral colours with it.

Dominant Colour Clear:

As well one of the must colours for this group. It will almost always guarantee a contrast effect with any other combined colour.

Dominant Colour Soft:

White is an essential accent colour for this category to ensure that the overall look doesn’t look to muted.

Some adivce when buying your white item in question:

  • The white shirt: Always a winner no matter what age or season. It should be part of every woman’s wardrobe. A white shirt makes muddy/ nude colours look sharper and by wearing a cardigan, jacket etc on top of it you always can tune and soften the pure white to suit your colouring.
  • White top/ T- shirt are a must as the white shirt in a woman’s wardrobe.  It is a great neutral weapon to dress up or down an outfit and will give any outfit always a lift. A classic that shouldn’t  be missed in anyone’s wardrobe.
  • White Dress: Is a beautiful choice for a summer outfit. But be careful the more formal, elegant and in a maxi version the more festive it will look. Many times it looks like women are taking a wedding dress out for a stroll. Try to choose your white dress right for the occasion, in a style that can’t be mistaken for a wedding dress and/ or choose it with colour and a pattern combination or mix it up with accessorising it with an contrasting theme or style. Avoid to dress in white from head to toe unless the occasion requires it. Also, the older we get the less forgiving a pure white dress will look on us. I guess it goes with the territory ” not that innocent anymore…”.
  • White Jacket: As well a must for any woman’s wardrobe, but should be worn only in sunshine or in a warm climate.  Not only one looks being on the wrong side of the planet but also the whole look can you turn look naff.
  • White Coat: Always a favourite for the summer! But proves in the UK not always a great investment buy since the sunny and warm days are here numbered. So, the more time you spend in a warm climate the better your money is spent on a white coat.
  • White trousers: Injects instantly elegance and chique to your outfit. It can be a one of your wardrobe heroes that you can’t live without it, but be careful since white trousers are not very forgiving when not having an easy  body shape to dress. It brings always attention and adds additional “visual volume” to that part of the body. So, make sure you can take it. Also, ensure you wear the right underwear with it, because many times the colour, style and make of your underwear can be seen by anyone but you. Not a good look at all!
  • White shorts: It always brings a smile to our faces since it is always the synonym for  sunshine, warm weather, fun, good time simply ” me time “. Watch out you got the right hemline for your thighs, calves and age. The thumb rule is the bigger and older they are the longer the hemline.
  • White skirts: Almost nothing makes an outfit as instantly girlie or feminine  chique as a skirt- depending on its style.  Most of the times they are not best to wear with tights, therefore they should be only worn with warm temperature, a hemline that suits the leg and occasion and in a style that works your age.
  • White shoes: Not always a hit. White pumps are best left for special occasions and white sandals and trainers are dirt sensitive.  It is better to buy cheaper white footwear but two instead, so you have more and longer wearing the look before they look shabby. It is simply impossible to keep them out of any dirt, foot marks or scratches.
  • White swimwear: Looks great on young, toned or both body.  Wearing a white swim wear gets you very quickly into dangerous waters with your skin, body and size and age. If in doubt just pass on this one!
  • White bags: As nice as they are in form of a clutch or shoulder or handbag or shopping bag they quickly pass their sell by date. They only wear with the right outfit, occasion, weather and also only when they are still completely untouched by any scratches and marks.

Golden Rules about dressing/styling right

Everyone is different to another and needs an individual and personalised advice how to dress right. There are an infinite number of physical features and each person has their own unique combination of these.

I. But here are some golden rules how to dress for success, which apply to everyone no matter what age, life style, work or play or budget.

  1. Complement your personal colouring, which is based your dominant colour ( Eye- hair and skin colour)
  2. Dress accordingly to your body shape, proportion and scale- it is important to understand how to dress to your build in order to create the appearance of a balanced body
  3. Dress appropriate for the occasion- learn the know how to get it right for each occasion no matter how different they might be.
  4. Dress right to your personality, which reflect your life style & character at work and play. It is your personality, which will put an outfit and look together.
  5. Current must be your look- make sure that your outfit do not look dated in fabrics, cuts and accessories. Nothing is more aging and draining than wearing clothes which look out of fashion. Make sure that your investments buys have a timeless look & feel, so you can jazz them up to the occasion & current fashion trend or season.

II. How to create the illusion of the perfect shape.

The aim is a neat hour glass figure ( which is considered the perfect & most balance figure of all body shapes). To achieve this we need to understand “line design”. A line leads the eye and can give optical illusion for our benefit.

  • The stripes on the left will make someone look wider  (if that’s what you need).

  • The stripes on the right make a person look longer (if that’s what you need).

The same rules apply to putting on make up as putting on a dress. Just as stripes on a dress can create an illusion of shape so can makeup and eyebrows.

Click here to read more on proportions

Balance rules to short Legs

  • Wear straight or boot cut trousers.
  • Opt for darker denim or trousers- ideally without patterns
  • Opt for a skirt/dress hemline that has a pencil skirt or straight line- best in solid colour and without any fuzz.
  • Wear heals rather than flats
  • Add length by wearing tights or socks in the same colour as your trousers or skirts
  • Avoid bulk and volume in your bottom, thigh and calf area e.g. strong feature in your back pockets, dropped skirt lines, baggy trousers, pleats, full skirts
  • Avoid turn ups, heavy patterns, washed out jeans or light coloured trousers, wide legs

Create Body Balance!

A visually balanced body, regardless of weight or height, always looks more flattering than an unbalanced one.

Creating perfect proportions can be achieved by modifying the lines of clothing. In this way you can visually e.g. widen narrow shoulders, create a longer neckline, disguise a fuller tummy or lengthen a short waist. It is possible to appear taller, shorter, heavier or thinner by making the line, style and cut work to your best advantage.

Your bodyshape, proportion, scale and body features e.g. small bust versa big bust; short versa long neck will determine which clothing line and details, such as neck-sleeve-waist-hemlines, will flatter you the most. By looking at your build objectively you will know how to dress your body and how to emphasize your advantages and hide your disadvantages. Every person has their own unique DNA, so accept your differences in build to others and see them instead as a challenge to create your own personal style.

So, for those of us who don’t have a perfectly balanced figure ( hourglass bodyshape/ upper and lower body in proportions) there are ways to give an illusion of balance. To achieve this we need to understand “line design”. A line leads the eye and can give optical illusion for our benefit.

Design lines in our garments need to complement our figure shape. So, a curvy figure looks more appealing with curvy design lines in the outfit rather than straight line, and a straight figure looks better in straight lines rather than curvy lines. All style lines need to lead towards a feature you want to emphasize, such as your waist or shoulders.

We often think that by wearing long loose jackets and tunics we will appear taller and slimmer- this is not so for everyone. A horizontal line can make us appear shorter and the nearer it is to your knees the shorter we look. For example if you are a pear shape, try on some short fitted jackets and see how much longer your legs appear and how much taller and slimmer you look. In many cases loose flowing garments will achieves the opposite by adding pounds instead of slimming our silhouette.

1. Body Balance rules in general

Do’s

  • For your body to look balanced your shoulders need to appear balanced with hips and thighs.
  • Wear garment design lines to complement your figure shape
  • To balance a long waist wear a belt, a wrap, Empire line, details to shorten it
  • To balance a short waist be choosy and careful with wearing fuzz and buzz such as belts, bows, highlighted Empire lines- less is better or even none of it.
  • Wear a tone in tone outfit to give the illusion of height.
  • Break the colour when you are tall

Don’ts

  • Avoid jacket hems finishing at your widest point e.g. hips or thighs. Your best length is above or below this level.
  • Avoid skirt/dress hems finishing at your widest point e.g. calves, unless you have very thin legs.

2.A few balance rules to:

A. Small Bust

  • Add details around neck and bust line e.g. necktie, cowl neckline, ruffles, pockets, prints, layers, scarves, dropped sleeve line
  • Wear a padded bra to add volume in your bust line
  • Layer on top to create curves
  • Avoid wearing tops dead straight from neck to hemline without any volume or layers or details

b. Full Bust

  • Wear lower and wider necklines e.g. scoop, square or V- necks
  • Make use of a well fitted bra to lift the bust and create more space between bust and waist
  • Keep the attention to your décolleté line e.g. embellishments and necklaces

c. Big Calves

  • Wear your skirt/dress hemline on your thinnest part of your leg line e.g. below knee or ankle length
  • Wear medium to chunky heels to balance with your big calf
  • Opt for straight or boot cut in your trousers instead of narrowing leg line
  • Avoid any bulk and detail in this area e.g. finishing hemline, short boots, buckles on your boots, ankle straps, kitten heels
  • Don’t wear mini skirts or short trousers or Capri trousers

d. Double Chin

  • Wear lower and wider necklines
